Good Practices for Building Organizational Alliances

  1. Recognize that partnerships evolve over time, and trust must be earned and created.
  2. Be open to working with individuals or groups despite differences on key issues of the day.
  3. Do not assume that others share your knowledge or have the same assumptions. Avoid jargon.
  4. Work to establish shared goals and understand when you will agree to disagree.
  5. Foster cooperation and understanding.
  6. Agree upon complementary roles, divide responsibilities fairly, and share the power and benefits of your partnership equally.
  7. Be prepared to learn from unlikely people.
  8. Be open to discovering that men and boys have unique insights that complement women’s perspectives on gender-based violence.
  9. Assume that everyone is a potential ally.
