Exercises

Using these exercises

The exercises in this tool kit are examples of the tools some prevention groups and trained facilitators are using, adapted for different groups, in carefully thought-out settings.

We encourage you to use them thoughtfully and with expert facilitation and guidance.

These exercises should be performed as part of a process that provides information and context for the issues so that participants learn and are challenged. Simply doing an exercise or expressing feelings and thoughts about an issue will not necessarily lead to greater understanding. A facilitator can help the group decide what it needs to enhance understanding and work more effectively.

A facilitator can also help provide the "safe space" needed for people to process their feelings and thoughts without being hurt-and any discussion of violence and gender issues may bring up complex and painful feelings both for those who have been abused and those who have been abusive. A facilitator can help the group respond to these reactions in supportive and caring ways, so these experiences and feelings can become a valuable part of the learning process.

Finally, a facilitator will know when and how to intervene if a participant judges or attacks others, is disrespectful, makes others feel unsafe, or is merely being distracting.
